Remembrance Project

The Remembrance Project involved the entire Mt. Ararat High School community. 5,500 clay forms were sculptured by students and staff, each form representing someone who was lost in the events of September 11.

Each homeroom got a bag containing 65 clay pieces. Students transformed these clay balls into tokens meant to symbolize their shared expression of loss.

As art teacher Chris Chapman explained in the instructions given to students: "What should you make? That is up to you and the clay in your hands -- just work in response to what you feel when you think of September 11. Clay is very receptive to what we are feeling if we let it be ... so, please don't stress. Just relax quietly and let your feelings go into the clay -- a focused squeeze will do."

Each clay remembrance was brought to the art room to be fired. The pieces were assembled into the final installation, The Remembrance Pillar, which stands on the high school grounds.
