Early Childhood Education

Recommended level: 11-12
One semester, 1/2 credit

This course, for students who see children in their future, promotes an understanding of the principles of guiding them in healthy learning and living. The physical, mental, emotional and social development of children, from infancy through school-age, is studied. An on-site preschool program gives students a chance to observe, study, and interact with toddlers and preschoolers.

Course Objectives:

As a result of early childhood education instruction in grade 11 or 12, students will:

  1. Identify strategies and skills useful in creating a quality parenting environment.
  2. Identify ways relationships, culture and societal issues impact the parenting role.
  3. Evaluate ways in which parenthood affects lifestyles.
  4. Evaluate readiness for parenting.
  5. Analyze factors which contribute to the emotional and physical health of the mother, father and baby during pre- and post-natal periods.
  6. Apply care and guidance procedures to children based on knowledge of their social, intellectual, language and physical development.
  7. Explore how to apply some problem solving techniques and coping strategies proven successful in the healthy development of children.
  8. Identify and assess sources of information and support systems available to families during stress and crises.
  9. Describe ways to enrich family relationships.
