Health means more than just the absence of illness. This course focuses on healthy lifestyles for today and for the future. Topics include mental health, growth and development, sexuality, CPR, nutrition, and issues surrounding drug and alcohol abuse. This course is designed to help teens not only survive, but also thrive in a challenging world.

Course Objectives: As a result of health instruction in grade 9, students will:

  1. Analyze how behavior can impact health maintenance and disease prevention.
  2. Explain the impact of personal health behaviors on the functioning of body systems.
  3. Evaluate the validity of health information, products and services.
  4. Analyze the role of individual responsibility of enhancing health.
  5. Analyze the short term and long term consequences of safe and risky or harmful behaviors.
  6. Evaluate the effect of various factors on personal, family and community health.
  7. Demonstrate skills for communicating effectively with family, peers and others.
  8. Predict immediate and long term impact of health decisions on individual, family and community.
  9. Express information and opinions about health issues.
