Independent Living


Recommended level: 11-12
One semester, 1/2 credit

Living on your own presents an interesting challenge. This course is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to meet that challenge successfully. Students will gain basic knowledge and develop skills necessary for everyday living.

Course Objectives:
As a result of independent living instruction in grade 11 or 12, students will:
  1. Analyze the changes and choices presented when living on their own.
  2. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the use of credit .
  3. Analyze the various types of checking and banking services available.
  4. Demonstrate skills in filling out the various forms associated with checking and banking services.
  5. Describe the various housing alternatives available and discuss obligations associated with them.
  6. Identify types of insurance protection and understand the terms associated with them.
  7. Analyze and understand the budgeting process and prepare a personal budget.
  8. Understand the purpose of taxes and prepare a Federal 1040 EZ and a Maine State Income Tax Form based on case studies.
  9. Prepare the necessary job application tools such as cover letters and resumes.
  10. Identify and describe appropriate job interview techniques.
  11. Demonstrate skills used in basic clothing care.
  12. Analyze the importance of basic nutrition information and its impact on health.
  13. Identify techniques used in food selection, purchasing and preparation.
