Math I

Full year, 1 credit
Ninth grade students enroll in one of the following four courses, depending upon demonstrated proficiency:

Foundations in Math I

This course is intended for students who need a continuation of work on computational math skills and their practical application to problem solving. Review of decimals, fractions, percents, geometry, measurement, and pre-algebra concepts will be included. The course will also utilize computer-assisted instruction to allow students an individualized approach to the improvement of their math skills. This course is designed to prepare students to enter the algebra program.

Technical Algebra I

This course is intended for students who may have difficulty with the pace of Academic Algebra I (described following). The course is designed as the first year of a three-year sequence allowing all students the chance to learn the fundamental ideas, concepts, and methods of algebra and geometry. This course is the first of a sequence that is strengthened each year through braiding it with the three strands of statistics, geometry, and discrete mathematics.

Academic Algebra I

This course includes topics in algebra such as solving equations and inequalities in one variable, exponents and radicals, radical expressions, linear equations in two variables, and quadratic equations. The course also integrates topics from geometry, probability and statistics into the algebra. Reading mathematics and problem solving are emphasized throughout the course.

Honors Geometry

This course is designed for students who have shown a proficiency in the prerequisite courses. The course content is similar to that of Academic Geometry, but with additional emphasis on problem solving, trigonometry, and solid geometry.
