District III 7th & 8th Grade Vocal Auditions

The 7th & 8th grade choral audition piece this year is: The Water is Wide

    • To be sung from memory with the accompaniment in the appropriate key for the student's voice part.
    • Students need to be able to tell the judge which key they would like for the accompaniment.
    • Adjustments may be made to a baritone's music to make it accessible to the boy's changing voice.
    • The student should present a copy of what he is going to sing to the judge.
    • Please do not violate any copyright laws when making that copy.
    • Humming is not allowed, students must use the words from Get America Singing...Again
    • The required lyrics and melody will be provided on this web site.

Sight Singing

    • All students will sight sing as part of the audition.
    • Music will be provided at the audition that adheres to the following established guidelines:

    * The example begins and ends on do.
    * The range is from do to sol.
    * The example uses stepwise motion except for do-mi-sol skips, up and/or down.
    * The example is four measures in 4/4 time.
    * Half, quarter, and eighth notes will be included.
    * Sing using solfege, numbers, other syllables.
    * Humming is not allowed (mouth must be open).
    * Sight reading is written in the key of F (treble clef for sopranos and altos, and bass clef for baritones).
    * Students will begin on the same pitch as they began their scale.

Scale

    • Sopranos and altos will proceed to a different room and judge for the scale (1st) and sight singing (2nd) portion of the audition.
    • Students will sing any major scale, up and down, using solfege syllables, numbers, or la.
    • Humming is not allowed. Mouth must be open. ("Ah" is fine. Vowels for a lovely sound and some consonants for articulation are definitely recommended!.)
    • Students must tell the judge what pitch they would like to start the scale on.
