Physical Education I
Recommended level: 9
One semester, 1/2 credit
Required to fulfill State physical education requirement
Students are introduced to the foundations of physical fitness and wellness. They
study how to assess and design a program in terms of the five health-related components:
muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular, flexibility, body composition, and
stress management. Based on their needs determined by a self-assessment and individual
interests, students design their fitness program.Students also have the opportunity
to assess skill-related fitness as well as examine and participate in various types
of fitness activities.
Course Objectives:
As a result of Physical Education I instruction in grade 9, students will:
- Develop an understanding of exercise and its relationship to fitness and well-being.
- Acquire a basic knowledge of health and exercise in order to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle by being involved in sport or recreation.
- Develop an understanding of the concepts of physical fitness.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the factors involved in evaluating present levels of fitness.
- Design, implement, and modify a personal fitness program based on her/his wellness profile.
- Identify activities appropriate for maintaining cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscle strength and endurance, and proper body composition.
- Participate in programs that provide opportunities to enhance her/his self-esteem and acquire a positive body image to participate skillfully and creatively in chosen activities.
- Integrate knowledge and understanding with other curricula within the school.
- Acquire an understanding of what activities are available in the community for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
