Saving Rich Text Files

It's really frustrating to work on a paper on your home computer only to come to school and find you are unable to open it. To ensure you can open your text files at any location, you can save them as a RTF documents (Rich Text Format). Saving a document as an RTF allows you to open your file in any text editor (such as Pages, OpenOffice, NeoOffice, or Word).

To save an RTF:

1- Select File > Save As
2- Choose where you want to save your document (server, documents folder, desktop, for instance).
3- Name your document
4- In the File type field select Rich Text Format (.rtf)

To open your RTF file at school, either:

1- Open OpenOffice, Pages, or Word
2- Select File > Open and locate your RTF document
-or
1- Control-click your RTF file.
2- Select Open With ...
3- Choose the application you want to use. (You might have to select Other ... to see your options.)

What is a PDF file?

A PDF file is a file that requires Adobe Reader to open. All the computers in the school have Adobe Reader installed on them.

If you are having trouble opening a PDF file try this:

  • Right Mouse CLICK on the file
  • Select OPEN WITH
  • This will open a selection box with a list of software, select Adobe Reader
  • ENTER

This will launch the Adobe Reader application and open the file.
