For our final meeting of the school year, we each
made book recommendations for summer vacation reading.
- Amanda recommends:
- Spanish Holiday by Kate Cann
- After months of planning a summer vacation in Spain with her friends Yaz and Ruth, Laura finds the "perfect getaway" marred by the presence of Ruth's obnoxious boyfriend who insists on sticking to the well-beaten tourist track.
- Thirty Years on the Line by Leo D. Stapleton
- Contains many true tales of life in the Boston Fire Department.
- Zach recommends:
- Eragon by Christopher Paolini
- In Aagaesia, a fifteen-year-old boy of unknown lineage called Eragon finds a mysterious stone that weaves his life into an intricate tapestry of destiny, magic, and power, peopled with dragons, elves, and monsters.
- Freddy the Pilot by Walter R. Brooks
- Freddy the pig and his animal friends take to the air to save Mr. Boomschmidt's Stupendous and Unexcelled Circus from the evil schemes of Watson P. Condiment, the comic book tycoon.
- Mrs. Gordon recommends:
- Breakout by Paul Fleischman
- Interweaves the seventeen- and twenty-five-year-old voices of a runaway who comes to a life-changing realization in an all-day Los Angeles traffic jam and uses the experience eight years later as material for a one-woman show.
- The Devil in the White City by Eric Larson
- Tells the parallel stories of Daniel Burnham, the main architect of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and serial killer Henry H. Holmes, discussing the challenges Burnham faced in creating the hugely successful White City, and looking at how Holmes used the opportunities afforded by the fair to lure victims to their deaths.
- Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems
- A pigeon that longs to drive a bus sees a chance to make its dream come true when the bus driver takes a short break.
